What is POSHAN Abhiyaan?

Poshan Abhiyan (Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition) is India’s flagship National Nutrition Mission, launched on March 8, 2018, by the Government of India to address malnutrition across the country. It is aimed at improving the nutritional outcomes of children (0–6 years), adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.

Vision

An India where every child, woman, and family gets the basic care needed for health to last their lifetime, and this India is a nourished one.

Target

Malnutrition, stunting will be reduced as a result of the introduction of better nutrition services, community awareness campaigns, and technology-driven monitoring.

Focus

The first 1,000 days, from conception to age two, will be supported to lay strong foundations for health that lasts a lifetime.

About the mission

POSHAN Abhiyaan: a people-first nutrition movement

It is more than a programme—it is a Jan Andolan (people’s movement) to put nutrition at the core of national development. The mission drives convergent, technology-enabled and community-led actions to shift from isolated interventions to a holistic ecosystem.

Guided by the Ministry of Women & Child Development and partners across India.

Vision & Target

  • To build a malnutrition-free India through collaborative action across sectors.
  • To reduce stunting, under-nutrition, anaemia and low birth-weight in a time-bound manner.
  • Focus on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life as the window for lifelong health.

Key objectives

Poshan Abhiyan scheme

The nutritional condition of the children aged 0-6 years, girls in their adolescence, expectant mothers, and nursing mothers will be improved.

A concrete schedule will be set for the elimination of stunting, under-nutrition, anaemia, and low birth weight.

Sustainable nutrition will be made possible through the adoption of diversified diets, fortified foods, kitchen gardens, and changing behaviour.

A real people’s movement, or Jan Andolan, will be organised in the communities throughout India.

Our approach

Convergence, technology and community

Cooperation among sectors:

Healthcare, education, farming, water, sanitation and hygiene, rural development and social welfare standards all work together to provide nutrition.

Technology & data-driven monitoring

The Poshan Portal and the Poshan Tracker App give the basic health workers, states, UTs and the public access to real-time information, control panels and monitoring of service provision.

Community participation & change of attitudes:

Community kitchens, local self-help groups, Anganwadi centres and community volunteers are all very important for the success of Mission Poshan, which encourages active participation of citizens.

Life-Cycle Nutrition Support:

Key life stages like pregnancy, early childhood, and adolescence are our main focus for nutrition. These stages support long-term wellness, reduce malnutrition, and lead to healthier future generations in terms of development.

Key features

What makes the mission work

The collaboration of all sectors leads to a more effective nutrition delivery system.

Gathering of information through technology gives precise and instantaneous reporting for all communities.

Whole life period consideration stimulates development from newborn to mothers.

Community participation is the key to making people aware, giving them resources and bringing about permanent changes in nutrition.

What's new in Poshan Abhiyan 2.0?

  • The renovation and modernisation of Anganwadi buildings to provide more efficient support to nutrition services.
  • Advanced digital dashboards and real-time data capture through the Poshan tracker app are being deployed.
  • Monthly events like Poshan Maah (Nutrition Month) and Poshan Pakhwada will be organised on a larger scale to enhance local contact.
  • Improvement in the country that is not selective, as emphasis is put on districts/states with a high burden.
